2050kids networks with groups specializing in global education, sustainable development, global health and climate change. Our team philosophy taps into intrinsic motivation by engaging and energizing youth and their communities in highly relevant activities that address key identified impacts of climate change where they live.


Sydney Skov, Program Manager

Sydney is deeply inspired by individuals working for positive change within their communities. After graduating from New York University with a degree in French and African Relations, Sydney pursued a career in international development in the United States, Senegal and India. Sydney earned her MA in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University and served as a Boren Fellow in Kolkata, India, working with a non-profit using dance therapy as rehabilitation for survivors of human trafficking. As a Fulbright researcher, Sydney remained in Kolkata to build Free Body Project, supporting organizations using dance as a resource for social justice through film and community. Sydney is thrilled to join the team at 2050kids as Program Manager.

Alex Leader, Program Associate

Alex works as the Program Associate for 2050kids, assisting the organization with marketing, fundraising, research, and helping plan the Biochar Cookstove pilot project. He is currently studying to obtain his Master’s degree at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy & Strategy. Alex has previously worked with Interactive Activism, Oxfam America, the Center for Biological Diversity, and the World Affairs Council. Much of his academic and professional experiences focus on implementing solutions to global environmental challenges. Alex received his Bachelor’s of Public Policy from the University of Michigan in 2014.

James Greyson, Advisor

James is founder and head of BlindSpot Think Tank, Research Fellow at Earth Systems Governance and associate at the MIT Climate CoLab. James leads research and work with governments to advance policy and practice for global systemic change, which can enable multiple interlocked complex problems to be resolved. James is keen to support the vast potential of youth to see fresh possibilities and to lead a new era of solutions that match the scale of today’s challenges, including climate change.

Board of Directors

Deborah Phelan, Founder & Chairman of the Board

Deborah has worked in the field of climate change and equity for over 20 years. She previously founded two nonprofits — Millénaire: The Third Millennium Education Project and FluidArts. Both international collaborations focused on the role of cross-cultural education via the interplay of Information and Communication Technologies, the arts, and the sciences. A member of the WiserEarth Advisory Board for four years, Deborah has covered the UNFCCC talks for CGIAR’s Global Landscape Forum, tcktcktck, Post Carbon Institute’s Resilience, and was a member of the Earth Island Institute delegation to COP19 in Warsaw. She belongs to the Society of Environmental Journalists.

Sean Adams, Secretary, Board of Directors

Sean is a technologist at heart with 18 years of diverse industry experience including semi-conductors, energy management, software development, and product management. He has worked in Texas, Australia, and California and is currently with Oracle’s cloud team in Rocklin, CA. His undergraduate education is in electrical engineering and he is obtaining an MBA in Spring of 2017. His professional interests include product and program ownership, process improvement, change management, and risk mitigation. His personal hobbies include anything outdoors and wood-working when he has the time.

Lizzy Leighty, Treasurer, Board of Directors

Lizzy joined the board of 2050kids after two years serving as their program manager. She has experience working with nonprofits in East Africa, Central and South America, India, and locally in the United States on projects with a focus on global health, food security, and education. Lizzy holds a Master’s Degree in International Development and Global Health from the University of Denver and currently works for San Francisco based Community Initiatives.

Gregory Serandos, Board of Directors

Greg is a marketing and storytelling specialist with 20 years of global experience in the technology, telecommunications, financial services, and non-profit sectors. A California native, Greg has lived and worked in Japan and South Africa for nearly 20 years. Since 2003, he has been heavily involved in entrepreneur mentoring, small business development, and the development of poor township and rural communities in Africa. Currently, his day job is marketing Silicon Valley startups while he volunteers for local Sausalito businesses and non-profits.
